# Line Items Overview

> Add devices to a deployment order, then provision them

Each line item on a deployment order represents one device. Line items are created and configured first, then provisioned — provisioning assigns a serial from inventory, writes the VAR sheet and equipment record, and stores the vendor terminal id the gateway returns.

  Provisioning a device is not the same as re-pushing its parameters. Use [Board and provision](/api-reference/deployments/board-and-provision-line-item-device) for a device that has not been activated yet, and [Push parameters](/api-reference/deployments/push-line-item-device-parameters) as the retry path when activation succeeded but the parameter push did not.
